Development of a reader for second-year Korean with texts written and annotated by the project director.
The project will produce the second part (Units 11-20) of an intermediate level (second-year) reader in Korean. The final text (Units 1-20) will include authentic materials and texts written for the textbook, along with exercises and glossary items. It will represent a full year's worth of materials for the intermediate level.
The main goal of this project is to develop teaching materials using TV commercials and creating various exercises (grammar, vocabulary, and culture) and activities for the beginning level learners.
The merits and benefits of this project are almost self-explanatory. Not only Brown students will benefit, it will also be a fine addition to Korean language education in general once the copyright issue is resolved. It can be used as a supplementary text for regular classroom teaching or for learners who want to learn more about cultural differences between Korea and America on their own. The text will be unique in its focus on teaching and guiding learners in the development of socio-pragmatic competence in addition to developing linguistic competence.
On the basis of data collected for several years, the project director will compile a handbook for elementary and intermediate learners of Korean which will address common errors which English-speakers make. Sections will be devoted to common errors in 1) Lexicon; 2) Grammar; 3) Sociolinguistics and 4) discourse/pragmatics. Explanations of proper usage will be followed by several exercises. The handbook will be useful for both heritage and non-heritage learners of Korean and should prove appropriate for Korean programs at post-secondary institutions regardless of which textbook is currently being used.
